Flaming June goes on into flaming July!

July 3, 2018

Wow!  It's been a very busy summer so far, and what a summer it is shaping up to be!

We've been bathing in the sunshine every day for most of June, with the most spectacular sunsets seen on our kayaking trips around the coastline.

Dolphins have been spotted regularly all around Cardigan Bay, and all of our recent guests have reported seeing them on their trips to local beaches and walks along the coast path.  A baby was seen with its mother at Mwnt last week, and very close sightings off of New Quay harbour.  If you look very carefully in the photo below, you'll see one swimming between us and the sunset last week when we were paddling from Llangrannog to Penbryn.  Magical...  Unfortunately, a drop of water blurs me out in this!  One of our guests even reported seeing a Sea Otter along the river at Cardigan - lucky things - that's one I haven't seen yet...

The Cwtch garden is blooming nicely, and the new fence is a big hit with guests and their dogs.  Having a completely secure area for dogs to run around in, together with the beautiful weather, means we have seen the garden used so much more this summer, which is great news!

Other news from the garden....the bees are enjoying the sunshine too!

One of our newly-acquired hives has a resident colony of beautiful local bees, which are thriving and expanding at a rapid rate.  The clever little workers are off collecting so much pollen from the surrounding area, which you can see as the different coloured cells in the close-up picture.  This means that, all being well, we'll be able to offer our own honey to guests next year - or even this Autumn if the sun keeps shining!

The hives are at a safe distance from The Cwtch garden, but close enough for guests to see their comings and goings if they wish.  Our current guest was taking some amazing photos of us carrying out our weekly inpection yesterday, so I'll share these in a future post here!

More local activities over the last month have included the Newcastle Emlyn Food Fair, where Mrs Whiskers, the emblem of Teifiside Plastic Free Community, made an appearance, spreading the word about reducing plastic waste around our coastlines.  Mrs Whiskers told the crowd about how local communities such as Aberporth, Llangrannog and New Quay are reducing plastic waste and encouraging visitors to use reusable water bottles, recycle, and taking part in beach cleans.  Great news.

We are also expecting a visit from The Cragen Sea Monster here in New Quay on Sunday 19th August.  Who is The Cragen?   She is said to dwell off the coast of Wales and experts have predicted that she will appear along the coastline with an important clean seas message during Wales’ Year of the Sea. Visitors and communities will gasp at her ingenuity and be amazed by her size (approximately 20 meters long) as she returns unwanted plastic waste from the sea to the land.

More about her in a later blog post methinks!

A wise purchase at the Food Fair was the latest small-batch product from Da Mhile distillery, based just down the road from us.  It is delicious, so have a look at their website and try out some of their delicious products when you visit!  Da Mhile will feature in an upcoming 5 things to do...... post regarding local producers, so watch this space!

Another fantastic foodie place to visit is Penlon At The Beach - a new venture by our favourite New Quay brewery, Penlon.  So, now we have the choice of pizzas, craft beers and gins on the farm where the brewery is sited, or overlooking the beautiful harbour at New Quay.  Cheers!
